Pet Expo

Yesterday I was at a Pet Expo in my community. It was a beautiful day and the event was inside and outside.  There were many exhibitors as well as spectators.

As I walked around the expo I noticed exhibitors giving away dog food samples and cat food samples that they would put in plastic bags to hand to people. There were many exhibitors selling water in bottles. What I did not see were recycle bins, only trash cans and there weren’t any reusable bags being handed out.

According to AB2176 which was passed in California, large venues and events must plan on reducing solid waste. Unfortunately, I do not see how there was any planning of reduction at this event.  Plastic bottles, cups and food waste was going directly into trash cans.  There weren’t any recycle cans nor compost containers.  This could have been done easily with signage and well marked recycle cans.

A little more effort on the part of the event committee and this could be an event that educates the public about recycling and protecting the environment while finding homes for animals, a win-win situation.
